Charleston, WV (April 30, 2009) - Six players were ejected in the seventh inning of Thursday night's game at Appalachian Power Park after a fight broke out between the West Virginia Power and Hagerstown Suns. The Hagerstown Suns used a pair of big innings before the fight to build a large lead and took the first game of the series 9-4.

Steve Lombardozzi laid down a bunt with a runner on in the first inning. The bunt induced an errant throw from Tyler Cox, which allowed Jose Lozada to score. Steven Souza drove in the next run in the first inning with an RBI single. Ronnie LaBrie scored Hagerstown's next run in the fourth inning on Michael Guerrero's Sacrifice Fly. West Virginia got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on Calvin Anderson's two-run homer, his third of the season.

The Suns began to pull away in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and two-outs, Chris Curran cleared the bases with a three-run triple to make it a 6-2 lead. The Suns put the game away in the seventh on Robert Jacobsen's three-run homer off Ramon Aguero. Aguero's very next pitch plunked Souza, which essentially started the fire. Terrence Engles, Hagerstown's starting pitcher, hit Calvin Anderson with the first pitch of the next inning, and Anderson charged the mound. Shortly after, the benches cleared and a fight broke out. Anderson, Robbie Grossman and Josue Peley were all ejected for West Virginia, while Osvaldo Rodriguez, Patrick Arnold and Engles were all tossed for Hagerstown.

West Virginia scored the game's final two runs after the fight. Andrew Walker drove in Erik Huber on a Sacrifice Fly in the seventh and Bobby Spain's triple plated Huber in the eighth.

Engles (1-1) allowed three runs on three hits with seven strikeouts over six innings and earned the victory before being ejected. Tyler Cox (0-3) surrendered three runs on five hits and fanned five over five innings but was tagged with the loss. Eddie Pena and Owen Brolsma both tossed scoreless innings of work for the Power.

West Virginia fell to 6-15 with the loss and the Suns improved to 7-11 after the victory. Chase D'Arnaud paced the Power with a 2-for-4 performance. West Virginia has been outscored 12-0 in the sixth and seventh innings over the last two games. They were held to just one hit over the final five innings.

West Virginia will continue the four game series with the Hagerstown Suns at Appalachian Power Park on Friday night. Right hander Duke Welker (0-2, 4.34) will start for West Virginia and the Suns will counter with right hander Paul Demny (0-0, 0.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
