Feisty Suns win opener in West Virginia, 9-2

CHARLESTON, WV: The Hagerstown Suns (7-11) punished the West Virginia Power (6-15) pitching staff and picked up the win 9-4 in a game marred in the seventh inning by a bench-clearing altercation.

With the score 9-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Suns starting pitcher Terrence Engles (1- 1) hit Power first baseman Calvin Anderson on the hip and Anderson then charged the mound, starting the confrontation. After the dust had settled, seven players were ejected including both Engles and Anderson.

The Suns started the scoring in the top of the first inning with two runs on three hits and an error by West Virginia starting pitcher Tyler Cox (0-3). The led became 3-0 in the top of the fourth as Ronnie LaBrie hit a one-out triple to left-center field and was driven in on a Michael Guerrero sacrifice fly.

After the Power got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth, Suns center fielder Chris Curran hit a bases-loaded triple in the top of the sixth inning to lengthen the Hagerstown lead to 6-2.

Hagerstown continued to pour it on in the top of the seventh, when DH Robbie Jacobsen hit a long home run over the left field wall with two runners on base. West Virginia reliever Ramon Aguero then hit Suns third baseman Steven Souza with a fastball on the next pitch, raising the tensions and leading to the eventual altercation.

Engles picked up the win for Hagerstown, the first by a Suns starting pitcher in the 2009 season.

The Suns and Power will play game two of the four game series on Friday, May 1st at 7:05 PM.
