Greenville Drive News Release
Asheville, NC - The Greenville Drive (68-67, 28-37) scored in their first at bat Thursday evening at McCormick Field. But from there the game belonged to the Asheville Tourists (82-53, 36-29) who recorded 16 hits en route to an 11-1 victory.
The Drive needed just one hit in the top of the first to plate their only run as David Mailman drew a lead off walk, advanced to second on Carlos Fernandez's single and then went to third on when Oscar Tejeda grounded into a fielder's choice. A Zach Penprase groundout scored Mailman.
Starting pitcher Connor Graham (12-6) along with three Tourists relievers combined to hold the Drive scoreless over the game's final eight innings, allowing just three hits. Graham allowed just two hits and struckout eight, but issued six walks in 6.0 innings before Edgmer Escalona, Robinson Fabian, and Ethan Katz each tossed a scoreless frame.
Things, however, did not go as smooth for Jose Capellan (3-6) of the Drive. The southpaw was roughed for seven runs on seven hits in just 2.0 innings of work, including a two-run homer by Darin Holcomb and solo shots by Helder Velazquez and Everth Cabrera.
Mike Rozier proved to be the Drive's most effective pitcher as he limited the Tourists to just one run on three hits and three walks in 3.0 innings of relief. Kyle Foster tossed the final 3.0 innings for Greenville, allowing three runs - two earned - on six hits and a walk.
But the night belonged to Holcomb, who in addition to belting his 14th homer, collected six runs batted in to push his season total to 101.
Right-hander Terumasa Matsuo will head to the mound for Greenville in the rubber match as Asheville will counter with right-hander Cory Riordan. Following tomorrow's series finale with the Tourists, the Drive will closeout the 2008 season with a three-game series in Hickory (NC) against the Crawdads.
