Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The night started off with a bang as Wren High standout Jason Place hit a line-drive home run in his first at-bat and his third of the season. However, the Drive could not keep up with the red-hot offense of the Asheville Tourists losing 6-2 Monday night at West End Field.
The loss dropped the Drive under .500 again at 9-10 while Asheville improved to 12-7 and in second place in the South Atlantic League Southern Division standings.
After the Place home run, which was his first long ball at home, in the second inning the Tourist offense scored five runs in the third and fourth off of Greenville starter Brian Steinocher to give them a 5-1 lead. Those runs included four extra base hits and a two-run home run by the number nine hitter Geoff Strickland. The Drive got another run in the fourth as first baseman Lars Anderson hit an opposite field home run to cut the lead to 5-2.
Steinocher would give up two more extra base hits in the fifth, one being a home run by Hector Gomez, and eventually be replaced by Greenville reliever Kyle Fernandes. Fernandes was impressive as he lasted 3.1 innings giving up only one hit with two strikeouts.
Steinocher gave up six runs on nine hits over 4.2 innings and was recorded with the loss, dropping him to 1-3 on the season. Keith Weiser (3-0) earned the win for the Tourists.
The Drive were led offensively by the Place and Anderson home runs while Victor Ferrante went 2-4 with three RBI to lead the Tourists. The Drive were also out hit 10-5.
