Catfish Defeat Rome in 12 Innings

Rome, GA - The Rome Braves fell again tonight in the second straight extra inning game to the Columbus Catfish 5-3 at State Mutual Stadium before a crowd of 2,692 fans.

The Catfish jumped out to an early lead in the first inning 1-0 on a triple by John Matulia and a run scoring single by Cesar Suarez. Rome tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Josh Morris reached base on an error, advanced to second on a single by Larry Williams, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a Chad Lundahl sacrifice fly.

Rome took the lead in the sixth scoring two to take a 3-1 lead. Jon Mark Owings led off with a triple and scored when Morris reached on an error. Morris moved to third when Larry Williams drove a single on a hit and run play and later scored when Danny Brezeale grounded into a force out.

Columbus countered with two runs of their own in the top of the seventh to tie the score 3-3. Matulia started it all with a walk and scored on a double by Suarez. Suarez then scored on a Brett Grandstrand single.

The Catfish struck with two runs in the top of the twelfth inning to make the score 5-3. Ryan Royster led off with a double and scored on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Grandstrand, who reached second on the error. Matt Fields then reached on another error. Grandstrand reached third on a double play and scored when Jairo de la Rosa singled to left. The Columbus bullpen held Rome in the bottom half to record the victory.

Neal Frontz (1-3) picked up the win for the Catfish pitching the final three innings and not allowing any runs while striking out five. Deunte Heath (0-1) takes the loss for Rome despite pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing two unearned runs and striking out five.
