Daytona Tortugas News Release
Clearwater, FL - The Daytona Tortugas were held to three hits in their 4-1 loss against the Clearwater Threshers at Bright House Field Tuesday night. Daytona struck out 13 times in their fifth consecutive road loss.
Daytona struck first with their only run in the third inning. Blake Butler led off the inning with a double to left field and Chad Tromp followed suit with a double of his own off the wall to score Butler, taking an early 1-0 lead. The Tortugas wouldn't have another baserunner until the ninth inning.
In the fourth, Clearwater knotted the game when Zach Green homered down the left field line with two outs, breaking an 0-for-13 drought. In the sixth, it was Green jumpstarting the Threshers' offense again, drawing a two-out walk to extend the inning. He moved to third on a single and scored on a passed ball to make it a 2-1 deficit for Daytona. The Threshers tacked on single tallies in the seventh and eight for good measure, putting the game out of reach for the Tortugas struggling offense.
Daytona brought the tying run to the plate with an out in the ninth, before Aristides Aquino bounced into a fielders choice and Angelo Gumbs grounded out for the final out of the game.
RHP Keury Mella (0-3) flashed signs of dominance, retiring 8 of his first 12 batters and striking out a pair of hitters in two different innings. However, he was the tough luck loser tossing 5 2/3 innings, while allowing two runs, one earned, and scattering seven hits.
Daytona's offense was unable to solve the mystery of RHP Tom Eshelman (1-1), who tossed seven strong innings, allowing two hits and striking out a career-high nine. After the back-to-back doubles, the Threshers starter retired the last 15 batters he faced.
Tomorrow is an afternoon matinee with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 P.M. RHP Wyatt Strahan (0-0, 3.27 ERA) is on the mound for the Tortugas while Clearwater counters with LHP Matt Imhof (0-1, 7.59 ERA). The Chili's pregame show begins at 11:50 on AM 1230 & AM 1490 WSBB.
Notes: Daytona struck out 13 times, their second most since this season (15 vs. Palm Beach, 4/12)... In his last 11 1/3 innings pitched, Mella has allowed just two earned runs but has not earned a victory...Daytona is now 0-6 when trailing after the sixth inning.
