Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Chris Paul's eighth inning sacrifice fly plated the eventual game-winning run in a 2-1 victory for the Fort Myers Miracle over the Jupiter Hammerheads on Tuesday night at Hammond Stadium.
Tied 1-1, Hammerheads reliever Juancito Martinez began the eight inning by plunking Miracle lead-off man Tanner English in the helmet with a 1-0 pitch. Remaining in the game, English advanced to second base when Alex Swim singled on the infield to short. Martinez (0-3) rallied to strikeout Nick Gordon, but issued a walk to Trey Vavra to load the bases. Paul stepped up and worked a 2-2 count before sending a drive out to left field. Yuniel Ramirez made the catch and threw home, but English tagged and scored easily to put the Miracle up 2-1.
Trevor Hildenberger remained in the game for the Miracle in the ninth after stranding a base runner in the eighth. Hildenberger (1-1) registered a perfect ninth inning with three ground ball outs to earn his first victory of the year and complete the win in a pitcher's duel at Hammond Stadium.
K.J. Woods broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth. After four scoreless frames from Miracle starter Stephen Gonsalves, Woods jumped on a 1-1 pitch and lifted the ball 403 feet beyond the wall in right field for a solo home run, 1-0.
The Miracle tied the game without a hit in the sixth. After getting five scoreless frames from starter Michael Mader, the Hammerheads brought in Cecil Tanner from the bullpen for the sixth. Tanner walked English, who then stole second base. Swim rolled out to second base to push English to third. Gordon came to the plate with infield drawn-in and hit a smash to first. Woods knocked the ball down and decided to tag out Gordon rather than attempt a throw home. English scored to tie the game back up, 1-1, and set the stage for Paul's sacrifice fly in the eighth to complete the comeback win.
Gonsalves received a no decision despite hurling seven inning and surrendering just one run on two hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Mader also had a scoreless outing over five innings with three hits given up and three punch outs.
The Miracle (8-5) return to Hammond Stadium on Wednesday night for at 7:05 p.m. against the Hammerheads (4-9). Right-hander Kohl Stewart (1-0) is on the hill for the Miracle against righty Jorgan Cavanerio (0-2) for Jupiter.
