Daytona Tortugas News Release
Daytona Beach, FL -Â The Daytona Tortugas (43-40, 6-7) took a 6-1 loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays (37-47, 5-9) under the sun on Wednesday afternoon at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
CF Junior Arias blasted a solo homer to left center in the first inning to give Daytona a 1-0 lead, but the Tortugas were held to just five singles and two walks the rest of the way. In a spot start, Alonzo Gonzalez surrendered just the one run on four hits with no walks and three strikeouts over four innings. MLB Futures Game participant Alberto Tirado (W, 4-1) struck out five Tortugas in three one-hit innings, and Arik Sikula (H, 2)(S, 2) recorded the final six outs of the game.Â
LHP Amir Garrett (L, 4-6), who will also partake in the Futures Game, allowed just two earned runs in five innings, but a two-out error led to a pair of unearned runs in his final frame. The D-Jays scored three times in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead, and never trailed again. Dunedin padded its lead to 6-1 in the top of the ninth inning, when Christian Lopes socked a two-run homer over the batting cages in left field.
Daytona's bullpen put together another strong performance to keep the Tortugas close. RHP Scott Brattvet surrendered a two-out double as part of a hitless sixth and picked up a K as he lowered his ERA to 2.25.
RHP Nick Howard pitched a perfect seventh, and has held opponents to just one hit and one walk over his last three innings of relief. LHP Nolan Becker pounded the strike zone in the eighth, and retired three straight batters after a leadoff single from Mitch Nay.
No Daytona batter reached base more than once. The Tortugas went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine runners on base.
Daytona will go for the series win on Thursday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET. RHP Sal Romano (4-3, 3.68 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Tortugas against Conner Greene (0-1, 6.00 ERA). The Jack's signature Thirsty Thursday drink specials will be in effect, with domestic draft beers starting at $1.
As with every game, fans can listen to the action on The Great Voice of Volusia County, AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB, starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 6:50 p.m. ET.
