Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA - After winning four games in a row, the Tampa Yankees (7-6, 41-42) fell behind early and failed to rally back as the Brevard County Manatees (5-8, 34-48-1) went on to win, 10-2, on Wednesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The Manatees tagged RHP Vicente Campos for four runs before the Yankees had a chance to bat. The first two batters reached and, with one out, Garrett Cooper hit an RBI ground-rule double off the warning track in right-center. Cameron Garfield followed with an RBI single and, one out later, Rafael Neda knocked in two more with a double to left-center, giving Brevard County a 4-0 lead.
Abiatal Avelino hit a one-out triple to the wall in right-center for the Yankees in the home half of the first. Avelino came home as Mike Ford doubled down the left field line. After that, Brevard County starter Jorge Ortega did not surrender much.
Ortega (7-5) allowed one run on seven hits in seven innings, walking one while striking out a pair.
The 'Tees doubled their score in the second. With the bases loaded and one out, Cooper skied a sacrifice fly into right-center. Garfield plated a run with a single left and a walk by Michael Ratterree reloaded the bases. RHP Luis Niebla entered and Neda blooped a two-run single into right before Angel Ortega flew out to end the inning.
Campos (0-2) allowed eight runs on eight hits in an inning and two-third, walking three with no strikeouts.
Niebla yielded a run in the fourth. Cooper was hit by a pitch and later advanced after a walk by Ratterree. With two outs, Ortega hit an RBI single to left, giving Brevard County a 9-1 advantage.
LHP Chaz Hebert entered in relief for Tampa in the fifth. The normal starter limited the Manatees to one run in five innings, scattering six hits and a walk, striking out three. The run came on a two-out home run by Omar Garcia in the ninth.
The Yankees loaded the bases in the ninth and were able to score one more run against RHP Preston Gainey. Avelino lined an RBI single into right, but overran a stop sign and was caught out at second stretching for two. Tyler Wade was caught between second and third and was promptly tagged out to end the game.
Avelino (3-for-5, 3B, R) drove in his ninth RBI of the year. Wade (2-for-4, BB) is batting .367 in his last 10 games. Wes Wilson (1-for-1, 2 BB, HBP) reached base in all four plate appearances.
