Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (July 7, 2015) - During the first game of this three game series between the Mets and Stone Crabs, there was never a sense that the visitors had much traction. It actually felt like the Mets would eventually break through and have the big inning, but that never happened. There was improvement from Brent Honeywell for six innings in his third start, and the righthander became the first starter to reach 100 pitches this season. Charlotte later capitalized with a run in the eighth and ninth, and Jeff Ames fought for his third save as the 'Crabs won consecutive games for the first time in the second half.

Honeywell's night started on a sour note when Champ Stuart led off the first with his fourth home run of the season on a no doubter over the left field wall. Jeff McNeil followed with a single, but the screwballer reversed the momentum with a 6-4-3 double play ball off the bat of Jairo Perez and a groundout from Dominic Smith to end the inning.

Logan Taylor did a great job keeping the ball down in the first two innings, and came out for the third with just a Marty Gantt single on his line. Granden Goetzman led off with a hard double down the left field line, and Braxton Lee worked a four pitch walk to put the tying runs on base for the top of the order. Andrew Velazquez laid down a nice bunt in front of the mound, but Taylor dropped it to load the bases with no outs. The next pitch to Kean Wong was lifted to left for a sacrifice fly to get the Stone Crabs on the board, and Stefan Sabol's throw back in was cut off near the mound by third baseman Jairo Perez. His throw to third base to get Lee sailed up the left field line, and two more runs came in on the error to make it 3-1.

The Mets tied the game in the fourth on back-to-back singles by Perez and Dominic Smith. Lee charged in from center on the Smith base hit, and sailed a throw over third which brought in a run and put the tying run just 90 feet away. Matt Oberste flied out to shallow right for the first out and Victor Cruzado swung through a ball in the dirt. The pitch bounced off catcher Maxx Tissenbaum and Smith came in to score the tying run on the dropped third strike, as Honeywell finished with six strikeouts for the night.

Taylor retired the Stone Crabs in order from innings four through seven, only to surrender a leadoff single to Goetzman in the eighth. Lee's sacrifice bunt brought up Velazquez, who sent a single into left to put runners at the corners with only one out. Wong fell behind 0-2, but worked the count full before hitting another sacrifice fly to center for a 4-3 lead. The top of the ninth started with a leadoff triple from Mike Marjama, who lined a triple to the right field wall past a diving Victor Cruzado. Jace Conrad made it 5-3 with a sacrifice fly to left, and gave the 'Crabs a little cushion as the Mets came up for their final three outs.

With closer Brad Schreiber promoted to Double-A Montgomery, Michael Johns turned to Ames for his third save. Facing the bottom third of the order, Ames walked Sabol and second baseman Phillip Evans to start the bottom of the ninth. Colton Playa's sacrifice bunt advanced the runners into scoring position for the top of the order, and subsequently backed Ames into a corner. He got Stuart to swing through a 3-2 fastball for the second out, and escaped the jam when McNeil popped out to Willy Adames at short for the final out.

The Stone Crabs can win their first series in nearly a month when the teams meet for the middle game of the series on Wednesday night at 6:30 PM. You can follow all the action by listening to the game on www.stonecrabsbaseball.com via TuneIn Radio, or tuning into 91.7 FM-WVIJ in the Port Charlotte area.
