Daytona Tortugas News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - A trio of runs in the third and a three run fourth off of RHP Andrew Jordan helped the Mets build a 6-1 lead as they cruised to a 7-2 victory on Saturday night at First Data Field. Daytona finished 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position and 0-for-4 with the bases loaded, falling to 20-22 in the second half.
Daytona got the scoring started in the top of the third. Stuart Fairchild reached on a lead-off single, stole second, then came into score on a two-out single from Brantley Bell to go up 1-0.
St. Lucie answered with three, two-out runs in the bottom half. Jordan walked the lead-off hitter, then gave up a single to Anthony Domino to put runners on the corners with no-outs. Jordan would set down the next two hitters, before walking Michael Paez on four pitches to load the bases. On the second pitch to Jeremy Vasquez, the Met first basemen lined a two-run single to right that got past Michael Beltre, allowing a third run to score on the error to go up 3-1.
The Mets added three more in the fourth. Jordan struck out the first man in the inning, then gave up an infield single to Wuilmer Becerra. Becerra moved up to second on the play because of a Jordan throwing error. Blake Tiberi followed that up with an infield single to put runners on the corners. Dimino then came up and hit the Mets third straight single, driving in Becerra from third to go up 4-1. Luis Carpio walked to load up the bases with one-away and Gene Cone followed that up by hitting a sacrifice fly to score Tiberi from third to extend the lead to 5-1 and Paez hit a 2-1 offering from Jordan for an RBI single to stretch the lead to 6-1.
Daytona got a run back in the seventh. Alfredo Rodriguez led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a Fairchild single, then came into score on a John Sansone double to cut the deficit to 6-2. Michael Beltre then drew a four pitch walk to load up the bases and force RHP Gabriel Llanes out of the game.
RHP Matt Pobereyko came on and help the Mets escape the jam. He got Bell to fly out and struck out both Bruce Yari and Tyler Stephenson to end the threat.
St. Lucie rounded out the scoring in the bottom of the seventh, when Ali Sanchez hit a one-out double, scoring Paez to go up 7-2.
Llanes (5-9) gets the win. He allowed two runs on nine hits and four walks in six innings with four strikeouts. Jordan (1-4) is handed the loss. He allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings with a pair of strikeouts. Pobereyko earned his eighth save. He tossed three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, walking one and striking out three.
RHP Tommy Bergjans (2-2, 4.41) will get the ball tomorrow for the Tortugas in the rubber match. He will be opposed by RHP Joe Cavallaro (2-1, 5.75). Daytona is 2-10 in series deciding games and have lost nine straight.
