Daytona Tortugas News Release
Viera, FL - 3B Taylor Sparks broke a 1-1 tie with a leadoff homer in the ninth inning, and the Tortugas held on for a 6-4 win over the Brevard County Manatees to clinch the season series and take home the I-95 Trophy.
Sparks unloaded on the first pitch of the final inning from Trevor Seidenberger (L, 4-2), and launched a 423-foot homer to left, his 13th long ball of the year.
2B Ty Washington followed with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from RF Jeff Gelalich. C Chad Wallach walked, and SS Ronald Bueno made it a 3-1 lead with an RBI single to right. CF Junior Arias lofted a run-scoring hit to left to extend the advantage, but the big delivery came from DH Sebastian Elizalde, who knocked in a pair of runs with a grounder past the shortstop hole. That gave Daytona a 6-1 cushion, and they wound up needing just about every run.
The Manatees rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth, until RHP El'Hajj Muhammad (S, 16) came in to close the door with a game-ending strikeout.
RHP Nick Travieso had faced the minimum through three innings, but Brevard County broke the scoreless deadlock in the fourth. Chris McFarland led off with a single and moved to second on an error from CF Junior Arias. McFarland gained third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground ball single from RF Clint Coulter.
The Tortugas tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning. LF Brian O'Grady started the rally with a wall ball double to right center, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly from 1B Daniel Pigott.
Travieso finished after six two-hit innings, having allowed just one unearned run with no walks and four strikeouts. LHP Nolan Beckerworked a perfect seventh with two strikeouts, and RHP Evan Mitchell (W, 3-2) worked around a leadoff single in the eighth to keep the score even entering the ninth inning.
Sparks finished 3-for-4, while Elizalde and Bueno added multi-hit games as well. After the two teams combined for two runs in the first eight innings, the offenses erupted for eight total runs in the final frame.
The Tortugas will host Game 2 of the series at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. It will be The Jack's last Dog Day of the season, where canine tickets are available for just $2, and all proceeds benefit the Halifax Humane Society.
