Tortugas' Bats Silenced in 6-0 Loss to Cardinals

Daytona Tortugas News Release

JUPITER, Fla. - Courtesy of a five-run sixth inning, Palm Beach was able to break the contest open, as the Cardinals shutout the Daytona Tortugas, 6-0, on Thursday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

A 1-0 contest heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Cardinals (6-2) put a man on with a bunt single, but a strikeout and a line out seemed to quell the threat. After a single through the right side by SS Jose Martinez (1-4, R), Daytona (3-5) brought in RHP Ryan Olson (1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) to get the squad out of the inning.

However, the Upland, Calif. native's control was uncharacteristically off. The right-hander walked the first two men he faced - forcing home a run - to extend Palm Beach's lead to 2-0. Things did not improve from there, as 2B Nick Dunn (3-4, R, 2 RBI) slapped a two-run single into left. Now up by four, DH Luken Baker (2-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI) put the finishing touches on the onslaught by cracking a two-run ground-rule double over the fence in right.

Mostly a pitcher's duel until then, the Cardinals had initially scratched across the game's first run in the second. An infield single and a throwing error started the frame, while C Alexis Wilson (2-4) singled to put runners at the corners with nobody out. LHP Packy Naughton (5.2 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) would induce a double-play grounder, but the run crossed from third to give Palm Beach an early one-run edge.

Daytona did not have many opportunities to score on Thursday, picking up just four singles throughout the contest. The Tortugas would get runners to second in the fifth and sixth innings, plus advancing a runner to third in the ninth, but could not break up the shutout.

RHP Alex Fagalde (5.0 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 3 SO) worked through some command issues to collect his first win of the season for the Redbirds. Naughton was impressive for Daytona but surrendered three runs (two earned) and was saddled with his first defeat.

The Tortugas will look to put the loss behind them on Friday, as they return home to Jackie Robinson Ballpark to open up a three-game series against the Tampa Tarpons, High-A affiliate of the New York Yankees. RHP Andrew Jordan (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is expected to grab the ball for Daytona in the opener. Tampa is projected to counter with RHP Glenn Otto (0-0, 2.25 ERA).

The Tortugas Pre-Game Show will kick off the broadcast at 6:50 p.m. ET, leading up to the 7:05 p.m. ET start. Friday evening's contest can be heard on daytonatortugas.com or via the TuneIn Radio and MiLB First Pitch apps.

Friday night will kick start the Tortugas' Jackie Robinson Weekend by wearing special No. 9 uniforms - the number Jackie wore during his history-making debut on City Island in 1946 - as part of the team's Best Dressed Friday series. It will also be the Tortugas' Friday Night Done Right, as the organization partners with One Voice for Volusia to recognize local children and heroes who continue to break barriers. Fans are encouraged to stick around until the final out, as they will be treated a spectacular Postgame Fireworks show after the game.

Season ticket and multi-game plans are still currently available and can be purchased online at www.daytonatortugas.com, or by calling the Tortugas' Ticket Office at (386) 257-3172.
