Torres Puts Away Midland with First Career Grand Slam
April 23, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release
Nick Torres' first career grand slam highlighted San Antonio's 10-3 win over Midland in front of 5,634 Saturday night at Wolff Stadium.
Fabio Castillo got the ball for the Missions in his fourth start of the season. The veteran right-hander allowed three RockHound hits in the top of the first, but no runs, thanks to Viosergy Rosa bouncing into an inning-ending double play.
In the top of the second, Castillo was not as fortunate, as Midland scratched out a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead.
San Antonio responded in a big way during the bottom of the frame, plating four on two-RBI singles by Jose Rondon and Auston Bousfield. A fielding error early in the inning by center fielder Brett Vertigan made all four of the runs charged to starter Dylan Covey unearned.
Two innings later, the RockHounds got within one on a Vertigan run-producing groundout.
Castillo (2-2) kept the Missions' lead into the sixth, departing with runners on second and third and two outs. His replacement, Ramon Benjamin, worked out of further trouble and then escaped a bases loaded jam of his own in the seventh to keep the score, 4-3.
In the bottom of the frame, San Antonio made Midland pay for wasting scoring chances. Trey Cochran-Gill began the inning for the RockHounds, relieving Covey (0-1). The right-hander looked like he was in for an easy seventh, retiring the first two hitters. However, Cochran-Gill, quickly ran into trouble as Rondon singled and then stole second. After walking Nelson Ward, Cochran-Gill allowed a single to Bousfield that loaded the bases. That brought up Torres, who drilled the hurler's first pitch onto the berm in left. The homer was the first one served up in the career of Cochran-Gill. It was also the Missions' first slam of 2016.
San Antonio capped scoring with two more in the eighth courtesy of a Gabriel Quintana single and a Rondon double. Rondon finished with a club, season-high tying three hits. The Missions set a new season high with their 10 runs in the win. It was the club's first back-to-back victories vs. Midland since May 16-17, 2015.
San Antonio (7-8) concludes its four-game series with Midland (8-7) Sunday afternoon at 2:05 PM. Johnny Hellweg (0-2, 7.56) will get the ball in the finale for the Missions, while the 'Hounds counter with fellow righty Chris Jensen (1-1, 4.50). Before the game there will be a special Kids Baseball Clinic courtesy of Kellogg's.
