Brockton Rox News Release

(Brockton, Mass. - July 18, 2011) - After mounting a four run lead in the early going, the Brockton Rox (2-0, 28-20) trailed by one heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, until Dominic Ramos knocked home the tying run, followed by Mike Torres' game-winning RBI single, that made the score 6-5 and resulted in a second straight victory over the New York Federals (0-2, 10-39).

Chris Valencia jumped on New York starter Michael Streaman in the first inning, with a base hit and a stolen base to open the frame and was immediately driven home on the first of four singles by Torres.

The Rox added to the tally with three more runs in the second frame, highlighted by Valencia's league leading fifth triple, that knocked in two and gave Brockton the 4-0 lead.

Streaman was able to quiet the Rox offense over the next four frames, before back-to-back singles chased him with no outs in the seventh. The righthander lasted six innings, allowing four runs on ten hits, while walking two and striking out three.

Robert Bono started well for Brockton, holding the Federals scoreless through five frames, until New York erased the deficit with a four-run sixth inning. The Feds collected four straight hits, with the final blow coming on a three-run homer by Eddie Lantigua. Dan Barbero started the rally with one of his team high three hits, going 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Tied at four, a pair of doubles by Derrick Pyles and Barbero put New York ahead in the top of the seventh inning against their former teammate and eventual game-winner Jake Loye (1-3).

Shortly thereafter the Rox threatened, putting two on with no outs in the bottom seventh, but Zach Woods (0-1) emerged from the bullpen in his Feds debut and sat down the next three, before ultimately taking the loss. Despite having the lead off man aboard in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, it would take until the eighth for the Rox to capitalize and retake the lead.

Woods retired Shawn Williams (3-for-4, 2 SB) for the first out in the eighth, before walking Ryan Royster. After pinch runner Tucker Nathans stole second and went to third on a throwing error, Ramos evened the score with an RBI single. He promptly stole second base and was driven home two batters later by Torres' single up the middle, giving Brockton the 6-5 lead.

Jake Hale got the call from the pen and nailed down his third save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Six different Rox stole a total of seven bases in the affair as Brockton collected their ninth straight home win.

The week long homestand rolls into game three on Tuesday night with Mike Smith (5-4, 3.55) set to face fellow righty James Kukucka (2-3, 5.58). The Rox are now just two games shy of equaling a franchise best home win streak of eleven games, set in 2009 from June 27 to July 19.
