Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Nick Salotti and Cameron Monger both went deep twice as the Tornadoes defeated the Bears 14-5 on Monday morning in Newark. Kevin Cooper (3-2) earned his second win against the Bears this season, and Mark Minicozzi added a homer of his own.

For the second game in a row, Newark took a lead in the bottom of the first and Worcester came back. This one, however, was a scoring outburst in the early innings and throughout (instead of the nine-run rally the Tornadoes put together between the seventh and ninth last night).

Salotti tied the game with a solo homer in the top of the second after former Tornadoes outfielder Danny Santiesteban gave the Bears a 1-0 lead. Later in the second, Chase Fontaine knocked two runs in with a double, plating Ryan Crespi and Brendon Kelliher to give Worcester an advantage it would never relinquish.

In the third, the Tornadoes went back-to-back with homeruns for the third time this season. Salotti hit a three-run bomb to start it (scoring Mark Minicozzi and Alex Trezza), and Monger finished the feat with a solo shot.

Worcester added another run in the fourth, albeit an unearned mark. Chris Colabello reached on an error by Burt Reynolds and scored when Trezza singled.

Newark pulled back within three runs thanks to a four-run fourth inning. Brandon Watson hit a three-run homer, after Pat Biserta's RBI groundout scored Santiesteban (who had tripled leading off the frame).

Minicozzi added his homer leading off the sixth inning. He chipped in with another RBI on a single in the eighth, and Monger finished the five-homer day (and all of the scoring) with a three-run shot later in the inning. The Bears were retired in order by Albert Ayala in the ninth, including a strikeout.

Cooper went 5.2 innings for the win, striking out seven, walking two, and allowing five runs (all earned) on seven hits. Nick Serino pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, striking out three and walking two.

The win gives Worcester a 5-4 lead in the 15-game season series with Newark, the most games the Tornadoes have against any opponent in 2011. Game three is Tuesday night at 5:35pm, with Tornadoes Pre-Game Live starting at 5:20 on USTREAM.
