Austin Spurs News Release
AUSTIN, TX (Nov. 7, 2008) - The Austin Toros selected guard Robert McKiver with the 16th pick in the first round of the 2008 NBA D-League Draft. McKiver, a 6-3, 190 pound guard out of Houston, averaged 23.6 points and 3.9 rebounds and earned first team all-Conference USA his junior and senior seasons.
"We saw Robert in the pre-draft workout in San Antonio and we liked him then but we began to like him even more as we heard about his work ethic and passion for the game," Toros head coach Quin Snyder said. "We're going to ask him to play a different role than in college but I think that's going to be something that will help him as he continues in his professional career."
In the second round, the Toros selected guard Mohamed Abukar with the 17th overall pick. Abukar, who played his collegiate basketball at San Diego State, averaged 15.8 points during his senior season and earned second team All-Mountain West honors.
"Abukar is definitely a great talent - we like his versatility and ability to make shots," Toros general manager Dell Demps said. "He will be a good addition to our team."
The Toros also selected Ezra Williams (Georgia), Kris Collins (New Mexico), Michael Sturms (Holy Family), Isaiah Fox (Arizona), Andrew Francis (Texas-San Antonio), Jahmar Thorpe (Houston), Marshall Brown (Missouri) and O'Neal Mims (Angelo State).
Ezra Williams, who played with the Toros during the inaugural 2005-06 season, averaged 12.5 points per game and is fourth in franchise history in 3-point field goals made.
Charles Gaines (Southern Mississippi), Malik Hairston (Oregon) and Tack Minor (LSU) were allocated on Thursday to the team. Gaines and Hairston participated in training camp with the San Antonio Spurs and Minor earned a roster opportunity after participating in the team's local player tryouts earlier this month.
Serge Angounou, Eric Dawson, Carldell Johnson and Marcus Williams will return to the team for the 2008-09 season. All four players were members of the team that won the Southwest Division championship and reached the D-League Finals for the first time in franchise history.
The Toros tip-off their fourth season in Austin on November 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Austin Convention Center against the Utah Flash. For Toros season and group ticket information, call the Toros office at (512) 236-8333 or visit austintoros.com.
