Toros Score 11 Unanswered to Move Closer to GBL Playoffs

TUCSON, ARIZ - The Tucson Toros were not fazed by St. George's five-run fourth inning and proved it by scoring 11 runs unanswered to defeat the RoadRunners 11-5 Friday night at Hi-Corbett Field. Tucson (20-12, 37-33overall) inches closer to wrapping up a spot in the GBL Playoffs by increasing their lead in the 2nd half to 2.5 games over St. George (21-18, 46-33).

David Seccombe (7-6) was dealt his fourth consecutive defeat after allowing 11 runs, five earned, on 13 hits over seven innings. In the crucial fifth inning, Tucson's Jim Rushford doubled home a pair and Curt Miaso gave the Toros' their first lead with a bloop single to left-center plating two more.

Tucson would add to their advantage scoring three in the sixth inning and to more in the seventh.

The RoadRunners took a 5-0 lead off Pete Hartmann in the fourth. Ryan Stevenson and Jose Rodriguez went back-to-back with solo home runs to lead off the frame. Angel Sanchez hit an RBI double and a hard hit ball off Yosvany Almario's bat brought in two runs when 3B Skip Adams could not pick it clean.

The lead was cut to four in the bottom half of the inning when Miaso singled to center scoring Andre Marshall.

Toby Nordman (2-1) shined tossing 3.2 innings of two hit baseball in relief of Hartmann to earn the win. Jason Hanna struck out one in recording the final four outs.

Game two is Saturday night in Tucson. St. George is expected to start right-hander Mike Martin (1-1, 3.60ERA with STG). First pitch is scheduled for 8:00pm Mountain.
