
Six Run Fifth Snaps Tie Game

The Calgary Vipers gave up six runs in the fifth inning as the Edmonton Capitals defeated them 11-7 before 1799 fans at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. With the game tied at four going into the bottom of the fifth Edmonton scored six times on five extra base-hits and seven hits in total to take the lead for good. The Capitals also blasted four home runs on the afternoon for a four run victory. With the loss the Vipers drop to 22-13 in the second half and 48-26 overall for the Golden Baseball League's top record.
At the plate Wilver Perez knocked in three runs with two hits while Colin Moro was three-for-five with two runs scored.
Dallas Mahan (3-4) took the loss for Calgary giving up seven runs in his two innings. Chris Little (7-3) took the victory in giving up six runs in five and a third innings while Derrick Depriest (3) recorded the save in pitching the final two and a third innings of the game while not allowing a run.
Calgary opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning as Fehlandt Lentini reached on an error, Sergio Pedroza walked, and Wilver Perez singled in a run for a 1-0 advantage.
Edmonton answered right back in the bottom of the frame as Jorge Cortes walked, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on a throwing error to tie the game. Mark Okano followed with a single, Darryl Brinkley walked, a groundout moved the runners into scoring position, and Jose Morban gave his team a 2-1 lead with a sacrifice fly.
Joey Gomes hit a solo home run in the third inning for the Capitals to increase their lead to 3-1.
The Vipers rallied in the top of the fourth as Drew Miller singled, Colin Moro doubled in a run, Rick Guarno singled home one to tie the game, Kevin Price walked, Jorge Mejia flied out to move Guarno to third base where he scored on a Lentini run batted in groundout for a 4-3 advantage.
Aaron Hornostaj tied the game for Edmonton at 4-4 in the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff home run.
The Capitals blew the game wide open in the bottom of the fifth frame with six runs for a 10-4 lead. Gomes homered, Morban tripled and scored on a wild pitch, Chad Ehrnsberger doubled, Joe Jiannetti launched a two-run shot, Hornostaj tripled, Cortes singled in one, stole second base, and scored on a Brinkley RBI base hit to cap the inning.
Calgary got two runs back in the top of the sixth as Mejia walked, Lentini and Raul Gonzalez singled to load the bases, and Perez plated two tallies with a base hit for a 10-6 score.
Moro led off the seventh inning with a single for the Snakes, moved to second base on a wild pitch, Price singled, and Mejia made the score 10-7 with a RBI fielder's choice.
Edmonton added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth frame as Kevin House, Gomes, and Morban hit consecutive singles for a 11-7 advantage.
This three game-series to close out the 2009 regular season continues on Saturday August 29th at 7:00 PM MDT and Sunday August 30th at 2:00 PM MDT. Evan Greusel (6-2) and Erik Dessau (8-5) will start the two games for the Snakes.
Games 1 & 2 of the North Division Championship Series will also be in Edmonton on Tuesday September 1st and Wednesday September 2nd with both games at 7:00 PM MDT.
The Vipers will host Game 3 of the North Division Championship Series against the Capitals on Friday September 4th at 7:05 PM MDT. If necessary Games 4 & 5 will be held on Saturday September 5th at 4:00 PM MDT and Sunday September 6th at 3:00 PM MDT also at Foothills Stadium.
