Long Beach Armada News Release

FULLERTON - The Orange County Flyers scored four runs off Koichi Misawa in the bottom of the ninth inning to upend the Armada, 7-6, at Goodwin Field on Thursday night. Misawa, who earned consecutive saves against the Flyers on Tuesday and Wednesday, gave up five hits in the inning, including the game-winning two-run single to Jimmy Rohan with two outs. Long Beach had been 32-0 this season when leading after eight innings.

Despite the loss, the Armada still has a chance to make the playoffs. If the St. George RoadRunners win three of four games over the Tucson Toros during the final weekend of the season, and the Armada wins three more games in 2009, Long Beach makes the playoffs for a GBL-record fourth time.

The Armada leapfrogged the Flyers with a four-run fourth inning. Steve Moss reached on an error, and J.J. Sherrill and Jonny Kaplan followed with infield singles. Two batters later, Flyers starting pitcher Andrew Lorraine walked Daryl Jones to score Moss. Asif Shah's fielders choice plated Sherrill. Lorraine hit Ramirez with a pitch to re-load the bases, and Josh Womack singled to score Jones. Brandon Howard's sac-fly brought in Shah for a 4-3 Armada lead.

J.J. Sherrill blasted his first homerun of the year for a 6-3 Armada lead to chase Flyers starter former Major Leaguer Andrew Lorraine from the game in the top of the eighth.

The Flyers nicked Long Beach starter Chase Baran for three runs in the first two innings. Ben Johnson cashed Damian Jackson on an RBI-groundout for a 1-0 OC lead, and four singles in the second inning led to two more runs.

Baran, making his first start of the season for the Armada, gave up three runs on nine hits in five innings of work. The lefty settled down after the first two innings to not allow a runner past first base in the third, fourth or fifth.

Long Beach begins a four-game series at Blair Field against the team's original manager Darrell Evans and his expansion Victoria Seals in the final home series of the regular season. First pitch on Friday is at 7:05pm.
