Worcester Tornadoes News Release

WORCESTER - Playing only hours after a marathon 20-inning defeat to New Jersey, Tom Cochran stymied Quebec in a 10-0 complete game shutout on Friday evening at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

The win moved the Tornadoes (20-13) into a first place tie with the Capitales. The shutout was only the fourth in the Can Am League all season, second by the Tornadoes. Worcester's other was by Matt Weagle in a seven-inning complete game on June 1 vs. Sussex. It also marked the team's first nine-inning complete game this season and third in franchise history (two being shutouts). In total, Cochran only faced five batters over the minimum while giving up only five hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. The win improved his record to 6-0, tying him for the league lead in victories.

The Tornadoes picked up six runs in the second inning and two more in the third and fourth to cruise to the win. Josh Farkes led the way with his first-professional home run while B.J. Weed also crushed a long home run. Four Worcester batters finished with multiple hits: Weed (3-for-5), Alex Trezza (2-for-5), Omar Pena (2-for-4), and Farkes (2-for-4). In the process, Weed and Trezza extended hitting streaks to 14 and 13 games, respectively.

Farkes' three-run third inning home run appeared to be heading foul, but bounced off the left field foul pole to the delight of the fans. The long shot scored Pena who reached via a double and Mike MacMillan who was hit by a pitch. The big inning continued when Scott Grimes hustled his way to a triple. Chris Colabello was then hit by the pitch while Trezza's ensuing double scored both runners, including Colabello who barely beat the throw to the plate. The scoring concluded when Francisco Caraballo's double into the left-center field gap scored Trezza for the 6-0 lead.

Worcester picked up two more runs in the third with Farkes once again as the catalyst. With two outs, he hit an infield single, leading up to Weed's third home run of the season. It marked Weed's second long ball in three games after hitting only one in the first 30 contests.

The Tornadoes reached double figures in the fourth when Chuck Jeroloman singled through the middle, scoring Trezza who reached on his second double of the game. Pena followed with a soft single to score Jeroloman for the 10-0 final.

Worcester continues its first-place battle with Quebec on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Shaun McNamara gets the start for the Tornadoes.
