
Skyhawks pound Surf

AUGUSTA, N.J. - The Sussex Skyhawks pounded out 19 hits en route to a 12-6 victory over the Atlantic City Surf before 4,543 on Friday night at Skylands Park.
Sussex catcher Yohanny Valera finished the night four for five with three RBI and two runs scored. Shortstop Kevin Rios had a three for five-night, while Matt Weston and Chris Brown drove in two runs apiece for Sussex.
Sussex starter Matt Salvato (3-1) went six innings to pick up his third win of the season. Atlantic City starter J.C. Huguet (4-1) gave up eight runs on 12 hits in 4.1 innings and was tagged with his first loss of the season.
Sussex improved to 17-17 while Atlantic City fell to 17-17.
Weston snapped a 2-2 game in the bottom of the third with a two-run single to give the Skyhawks a 4-2 lead.
After Atlantic City cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the fourth, the Skyhawks extended their lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Designated hitter Walter Young doubled down the right field line scoring Jorge Moreno all the way from first giving the Skyhawks a 5-3 advantage. Valera drove in Young with a single to right to make it 6-3.
Brown beat out an infield single to score Weston from third to give Sussex a 7-3 lead. Sussex added another run when Ron Perodin walked with the bases loaded to make it an 8-3 game.
The Skyhawks added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Atlantic City and Sussex return to action at Skylands Park on Saturday at 5:05 p.m. in the second game of the three game series.
