New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - The New Jersey Jackals rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth against Nashua closer Andrew Weimer but it wasn't enough as the Jackals fell at home to the Nashua Pride 5-4 in front of 3,065 fans on Friday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Trailing 5-2 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, Jackals CF Zack Smithlin laced a one-out double. After a strikeout, 2B Marcus Sanders singled Smithlin home to pull the Jackals within two. With Sanders running on the pitch, the next batter, Matt Lauderdale, collected his first hit in his last eleven at-bats to score Sanders and cut the Nashua lead to one at 5-4. However, Weimer buckled down as he struck out RF Luke Allen to end the game and earn his league-leading tenth save of the season.

Sanders had a good night on offense for New Jersey, going 3-5 with an RBI and two runs scored a night after tying the Can-Am League record for hits in a game, but the Jackals fell for the fourth time in as many games against Nashua this season. Allen got the Jackals out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when he connected on his second home run of the season, a line-drive shot to right field off Pride starter Jarrett Stawarz. Following the Allen home run, Nashua counted by scoring the game's next five runs. In the top of the fourth inning, a double by DH Argenis Tavarez plated RF Jeremy Pickrel to cut the Jackals lead to one. In the top of the fifth inning, the Pride erupted for three runs off New Jersey starter Aaron Tressler. Tressler hit leadoff man Jack Joffrion and proceeded to walk SS Sandy Almonte and CF Vinny Pennell to load the bases with no outs. Two batters later, an RBI single by 1B Bryan Duplissie gave Nashua a 3-2 advantage. The Pride made it 4-2 when a throwing error by Sanders enabled Pennell to cross the plate. Nashua added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning when Pickrel homered for the fifth time this season to extend the Pride lead to 5-2.

Tressler (1-3) went eight innings to save the Jackals bullpen following last night's 20-inning, but the right hander took the loss after allowing five runs - four earned - on seven hits while walking five batters and fanning seven. Stawarz (3-1) earned the win, scattering four hits over five innings while yielding two runs. Pennell led the charge on offense for Nashua, going 2-4 while Pickrell scored two runs in the win. The loss ends New Jersey's four-game winnings streak.

The Jackals and Pride continue their three-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. New Jersey right-hander Tom Atlee makes his first start of the season against Nashua's German Melendez. If you can't make it out to Yogi Berra Stadium, you can catch every pitch via live webcast at www.jackals.com with coverage beginning five minutes prior to the start of the game.
