Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER- Before a sellout crowd of 3,345 the Worcester Tornadoes defeated the Quebec Capitales 10-1 in the series finale of the three game homestand. Quebec pitching was pounded all night, allowing 18 hits, 10 runs and committing 2 errors. Tornado fans enjoyed performances and an autograph session by members of the New England Patriots cheerleading squad.
The Tornados big inning came in the sixth, starting with Tucker Frawley's twelve pitch at-bat resulted in a walk. Frawley moved to third on Taylor's sacrifice bunt that resulted as an error by second basemen Dany Scalabrini. Quebec's reliever Dennis Gomez then balked in a run and hit Josh Beauregard. Chris Colabello (3-5, 2 RBI) laced a double to left, scoring Beauregard, expanding the lead to 8-1. Things continued to get rough for Gomez as Onix Mercado hit a loop single into left, adding two, ending the sixth with the Tornadoes leading 10-1.
Starter Junior Guerrero (4-2) had a solid performance on the hill going 6 innings, allowing only 4 hits, 1 earned run and striking out 5. Guerrero should be noted for his performance, as he got the Tornadoes out of several tight jams.
The Tornadoes threatened in the bottom of the first when Bob Tewksbary, who has been leading the surging Tornadoes as of late, doubled down the left field line.
Quebec's Willie James reached on a fielder's choice and then stole second and third in the third, however Junior Guerrero dug deep and struck out both Benoit Emond and Dany Scalabrini to end the threat.
Worcester retaliated in the bottom half of the inning, putting the first runs of the game on the board with a single up the middle by third basemen Jeff Lahair (3-5). After Lahair moved up to second on a stolen base, Frawley bunt singled, scoring Lahair on Brad Purcell's throwing error. The Tornadoes continued the pressure with a double by leadoff man Lucas Taylor and a hit by Josh Beauregard (3-4, 2 RBI), opening up the Tornadoes lead to 3-0.
Quebec countered with their lone run in the top of the fourth when Simon Legare walked and moved up to second on Olivier Lepine's single. Mick Kurhan's double would have scored two but the Tornadoes were fortunate enough to allow only one run because the Tornadoes appealed Lepine touching third base, getting out of the jam.
The Tornadoes added some insurance in the fifth when Josh Beauregard led off the inning with a single and scored on Colabello's deep double into right centerfield. Onix Mercado followed with a base hit, scoring Colabello, making the score 5-1.
Between relievers Chris Shank and Elvis Jiminez, they allowed only one hit in their final three innings of work. Quebec's Brad Purcell (1-4) was tagged with loss going only 4 innings, giving up 8 hits and allowing 4 runs.
The Worcester Tornadoes have a day off tomorrow (6/22) and will be on the road Friday against division leader Sussex for a three game series and then against Nashua before returning home on 6/30 to face Brockton.
