Tornadoes squander opportunities; fall to Skyhawks

June 6, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Worcester, MA- The Worcester Tornadoes dropped to 8-4 on the season losing the first of a three game set to the Sussex Skyhawks by a score of 6-3 in front of 2,355 fans.

The Skyhawks ran their winning streak to five and improved to 8-4 on the season with the win, tying them for first place in the CanAm league with the Tornadoes. The story of the game for the Tornadoes was the inability to capitalize on the walks handed to them. Skyhawk pitching allowed an astonishing 13 walks, even more surprisingly, none of those base runners scored.

Junior Guerrero took the loss for the Tornadoes although he did not pitch poorly. Guerrero threw 4.2 innings surrendering four runs on six hits, only two of the runs were earned. It seemed Guerrero out pitched the Skyhawks starting hurler, Dave Campos, who although he could not seem to find the plate, left the game without allowing an earned run. Campos allowed eight walks and two hits in 3.2 innings, therefore he was not eligible for picking up the victory.

The Skyhawks scored first when they were able to piece together three consecutive singles. The run came across on an RBI single by catcher Abraham Ayala, scoring third baseman Elvis Corporan.

The Tornadoes left the bases loaded in each the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. In the fourth, Campos walked three batters before being pulled for Alex Smith. Smith promptly got out of the jam by inducing a double play by Tornadoes catcher Onix Mercado.

The Skyhawks scored three runs in the top half of the fifth to go up by four. The rally started with a walk to the eighth hitter, Scott Grimes. Grimes came around to score on a RBI single from Josh Ury.

The Tornadoes came back with one of their own in the bottom of the fifth, a run manufactured almost single handedly by leadoff hitter Lucas Taylor. Taylor lead off the inning with a single, proceeded to steal second and third base before coming in on a single by Tornadoes left fielder, Josh Beauregard.

Both teams tacked on two runs in the sixth, the Skyhawks coming via a home run. The blast was courtesy of Bobby LeNoir, ninth hitter and shortstop for the Skyhawks. The Tornadoes countered with their two coming in on a two out two RBI single by Chris Colabello.

Jose Correa came on to pitch the final 3.1 innings for the Skyhawks and effectively shut down the Tornadoes. For his work the official scorer used his discretion to give him the victory. Correa curbed any thoughts of a Tornadoes comeback by allowing only one infield hit over his time.

A limited number of tickets remain for the five home games during the home stand and can be purchased on line at www.worcestertornadoes.com, by calling the ticket office at 508.792.2288 or by visiting the team shop at 303 Main Street, Worcester, at the intersection of Main and Exchange St.
