Spirit can't hold lead; drop series opener
June 6, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release
The Spirit held the lead for much of this contest, but the New Haven County Cutters stole a 4-3 victory with a late inning surge in the first game of the series at Fraser Field.
The Spirit took their first lead of the game in the fourth inning without the benefit of a hit. Garrett Weir got the inning started with a walk and scored the first run of the game on an error from the Cutters shortstop.
The Cutters answered with a run of their own in the top of the fifth on an RBI double from D.J. Bailey to once again even the score.
The Spirit, however, reclaimed their advantage with a two-run sixth inning. B.J. Weed scored the first run on an RBI single from Dan Batz. Vic Davilla singled to reach base and scored on an error by the Cutters shortstop.
The Cutters picked up another run in the seventh inning to cut the Spirit lead in half. Jose Delgado singled to lead off the inning and came around to score on an RBI single from D.J. Bailey.
New Haven took its first lead of the game in the top of the eighth inning. Orlando Encarnacion tied the game with a solo home run and Thomari Story-Harden put the Cutters on top with an RBI single.
The Cutters' late-inning surge would stand as the difference in the contest, as the Spirit failed to score another run.
Spirit starter Jarrad Lavergne went 4.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits to pick up the no-decision. Jake Brooks allowed two earned runs on two hits in 2/3 of an inning to suffer the loss in relief. Cutters starter Courtney Hall kept the Spirit offense off-balance for much of the contest allowing just two earned runs on two hits in 5.1 innings of work. Cutters reliever pitched 3.2 innings to earn the victory.
The three-game series between the Spirit and the Cutters resumes tomorrow at 7:05 at Fraser Field. Bryan Morse takes the mound for North Shore, while the Cutters will start Brad Whitworth.
