Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Brockton, MA -- The Worcester Tornadoes showed a lot of character, as they rebounded from the disastrous 9th inning from the night before to defeat the Rox 8-6 and take three of the four games of the series at Campanelli Stadium.

The game was a back-and-forth affair at the start, as Tornadoes righty Alex Pena (1-1) struggled early, allowing 9 of 11 batters to reach at one point. But Pena allowed just three runs through the first two innings despite the struggles, and gave his team a chance to do some damage against Rox righthander Gary Galvez (1-2).

The Tornadoes tied it at 3-3 on a big two-out two-run single from Yohanny Valera in the 3rd inning, then went ahead 4-3 on a Chris Colabello groundout in the 5th. But Francisco Lebron ripped a home run to left-center off Pena in the bottom half of the inning to re-tie the game, 4-4. The Tornadoes came right back in the top half of the 6th, using a Jeff LaHair RBI single and a fielding error by centerfielder Joe Hough to plate two more and go ahead 6-4.

Jamie Merchant came on in relief of Alex Pena and continued his dominance of Can-Am League hitters, tossing three scoreless frames to up his season-starting scoreless innings streak to nine consecutive. It was 6-4 heading to the top of the 9th when Worcester tacked on two huge insurance runs off Rox closer Ryan Burnau. That made it 8-4 and those runs would turn out to be critical as Eddie Pena struggled with his control in the bottom of the 9th, walking three and giving up an RBI double to Guye Senjem. Brockton cut it to 8-6 and had the tying runs on base with the winning run at the plate, but Pena struck out Matt Maloney on a pitch a foot outside to end it.

Dominic Ramos and Colabello each had three-hit nights, with Colabello adding three RBIs to up his league-leading total to 18. Alex Pena (1-1) was credited with his first win of the season and Galvez (1-2) took the loss. The Tornadoes will return home for a brief three-game homestand with the traveling Grays, starting Friday night. Lefty Mike Meagher is scheduled to make the start for the Tornadoes. First pitch is set for 705pm.
