Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Worcester, MA -- The Worcester offense scored 12 unanswered runs, exploding for 6 runs in the 6th and 6 more in the 7th, to overcome a 5-1 deficit and defeat the Brockton Rox, 13-5, in the rubber game of the series at Hanover Insurance Park on Thursday night.
The Tornadoes scored first on an Andrew Wishy RBI single in the 2nd inning, but Brockton got three in the 4th (John Allen two-run home run and a Melvin Falu RBI double) and two more in the 5th on Francisco Lebron second home run in as many nights, a two-run shot to center, that but the Rox on top, 5-1.
But Rox starter Mike McTamney walked the bases loaded with one out in the 6th and was lifted in favor of righty Ari Kafka (0-1). Kafka induced a long flyball to leftcenter off the bat of Wishy that fell in for an error with two runs scoring on the play. After Mike DeCarlo flied out, Keith Beauregard walked to reload the bases for Mike MacMillan. MacMillan proceeded to deposit a Kafka pitch just over the leftfield fence for a grand slam (the Tornadoes second of the season) and a 7-5 lead. Worcester would bat around a score 6 more runs for the second straight inning in the 7th, with the big blows RBI singles for Patrick Perry and Wishy and two-run hits for Keith Beauregard and MacMillan. The Tornadoes led 13-5 at that point, and that's how it would stay.
Shaun McNamara (2-4) picked up his first win with his hometown Tornadoes with two scoreless innings of relief and Kafka (0-1) took the loss. MacMillan knocked in 6 runs, nearly doubling his season RBI total from 7 to 13. Wishy had two hits and drove home 3 runs. The Tornadoes also set a new Can-Am League record by turning 5 double plays in the game (2 ground ball, 1 popup, 1 lineout, 1 strikeout). Worcester turned 12 double plays in the series. The Tornadoes have now won five of their last six games and are back at the .500 mark (29-29) for the season. Worcester will try to make it three straight wins when they head down to Atlantic City for the first of a three-game series against the Surf on Friday night. Lefty Mike Meagher is scheduled to start for the Tornadoes and he will be opposed by Surf righty Monte Mansfield. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
