Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER, MA - Powered by a season-high eight extra-base hits including three homers, the Worcester Tornadoes recaptured a share of first place with a 15-6 victory over the Quebec Capitales Sunday afternoon at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
The 15 run, 19 hit effort moves the Tornadoes (21-14) back into a tie atop of the Can-Am League standings with the Capitales (21-14). The win also evens up the season series between the two teams at three games apiece. Matt Weagle (6-2) recorded the victory as he went seven strong innings surrendering four runs on eight hits while tallying a career-high eight strikeouts. Weagle did not walk a batter.
Once again, the Worcester offense was ignited by lead-off hitter B.J. Weed who knocked three hits including a 2-run single in the fifth. In the process, Weed also extended his hitting streak to 16 games which is one shy of tying a Tornadoes team record.
The second inning was the spark for Worcester as they plated five runs; all of them after two outs had been recorded. With two men on, Scott Grimes stroked his league-leading eighth homer and then after a double by Chris Colabello, Francisco Caraballo drove in two more with his seventh home run on the season. Alex Trezza added the team's third homer in the sixth with a man on which was his sixth of the year.
Omar Pena also continued his hot pace, extending his hitting streak to six games with a four-hit effort. Pena finished the series with an outstanding eight hits in 12 chances against Quebec pitching over the weekend.
Capitales starter Kevin Beavers (2-3) struggled for the first time in his last four outings, getting touched up for eight runs in 4.1 innings pitched. Relievers Mark James and Felix Arellan got knocked around as well as they combined to allow seven runs over 3.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Quebec held a slim 2-1 lead heading into the home half of the second and they also pulled to within two runs in the fifth but the Tornadoes went onto score nine unanswered en route to the blowout win. The Capitales scored all six of their runs via the long ball, as Greg Stevens, Patrick Deschenes and Mike Gross each had 2-run shots.
