New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The Nashua Pride unleashed a three-homer attack against New Jersey Jackals starting pitcher Michael Vicaro as they defeated the Jackals 6-2 on Sunday evening at Yogi Berra Stadium.
A day after the Jackals jumped out to a four run lead in the first inning on Saturday, the Pride returned the favor as they plated four runs in the first inning on Sunday. With two runners aboard and one out, Nashua 1B Bryan Duplissie hit his fifth home run of the season to give the Pride a 3-0 lead. The next batter, RF Jeremy Pickrel, followed with his sixth home run of the season to put the Pride up 4-0 before New Jersey came to bat.
In the bottom of the first, the Jackals struck back immediately as 2B Marcus Sanders led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by CF Zack Smithlin to cut the Nashua lead to 4-1.
Following his rough start, Vicaro settled down before the Pride re-gained a four-run in the top of the fifth inning on a monstrous solo home run by LF Denny Abreu that cleared the scoreboard in left field. Nashua led 5-1 after Abreu's third hit of the night, but New Jersey countered in the bottom of the sixth when RF Luke Allen hit his third home run of the season to cut the deficit to 5-2.
In the top of the eighth inning, back-to-back singles off New Jersey reliever Ted Serro were followed by an error by 3B Vic Davilla as Nashua loaded the bases with no outs for CF Vinny Pennell. Pennell proceeded to ground into a double play, but DH Jerod Edmondson scored to give the Pride some insurance and close out the scoring at 6-2.
Pride starter Hideki Nagasaka (5-1) allowed two earned runs on six hits over seven innings to earn the win. The Japanese right-hander walked one batter while striking out four. Nashua reliver Adam Piechowski picked up two strikeouts as he allowed just one hit over the final two innings. Vicaro (4-3) was tagged with the loss after surrendering five runs on nine hits while walking four and fanning six in six innings.
For Nashua, Abreu went 3-5 and finished a triple shy of the cycle. Duplissie also had a good night, collecting three hits in five at-bats. For New Jersey, seven starters each collected one hit each as the Jackals were outhit 13-7.
The Jackals remain 2 1/2 games behind the Can-Am League-leading Worcester Tornadoes, who begin a three-game series tomorrow at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Tornadoes and Capitales de Quebec are tied for first place with eleven games remaining in the first half of the season. Juan Done will make his seventh start of the season for the Jackals with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, you can catch every inning via live webcast at www.jackals.com.
