June 26, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

For the second time in three days, the Tornadoes won game one of a doubleheader and blew a lead in game two, losing to the Pittsfield Colonials.

Game one was a continuation of Saturday's suspended game. Worcester had scored five runs in the bottom of the third on a bases-clearing double by Mark Minicozzi and a two-run homer for Nick Salotti after Pittsfield garnered a run in the first. The game stopped with two on and none out with a 1-1 count on Pittsfield third baseman Johnny Welch.

Zach Zuercher started his outing in that situation on Sunday, taking over for Kevin Cooper (who had thrown 3+ innings, allowing one run). Zuercher earned his fifth win of the season by tossing six shutout innings, striking out five and allowing just three baserunners. The Tornadoes ace struck out the side in order in the ninth.

In game two (a seven-inning contest), the Colonials struck first. Of their four games in the series against Worcester, they won each time they put the game's first run up on the board. In the bottom of the first inning, Minicozzi hit an RBI single to plate Alex Nunez.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the fourth, when Alex Trezza hit an opposite-field solo homer, giving Worcester its first lead in game two at 2-1. The Tornadoes added an insurance run in the fifth, when Nunez scored on a throwing error by the shortstop Matt Nandin.

Pittsfield came a run closer to tying the game in the top of the sixth, making the score 3-2 with a Johnny Welch solo homer (his second of the series). In the bottom half of the inning though, Worcester added another run on Ryan Crespi's RBI single off of the eventual game winner, Mike Zenko.

In the top of the seventh, The Colonials scored four runs, three of them with two outs. Rafael Cabreja led off the inning with a walk against Worcester closer Rick Asadoorian. The next two batters, Jerod Edmondson and Matt Nandin, struck out before three straight batters recorded hits. Danny Bomback got an RBI double and represented the tying run at second base. He was knocked in by Angel Molina, who hit a triple off of Cam Monger's glove in center after Monger ran almost all the way back to the wall. Molina came around to score on Billy Mottram's RBI single, then Mottram singled without an RBI for a Pittsfield batter. Mottram stole secon, then took third on a wild pitch. The throw from Trezza down to Minicozzi was wild, allowing Mottram to trot home.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Tornades had the tying run at the plate with two outs. Minicozzi doubled, but Nick Salotti popped out in foul territory to end the game and the series.

Zenko pitched an inning and a third for the victory, striking out one, walking none, and allowing two hits. No runs of his own scored, but he allowed one inherited runner to come acopss the plate.

Rick Asadoorian blew the save and was given the loss, striking out the side in the top of the seventh, and getting ejected after it ended. Chris Colabello was also ejected earlier in the game for arguing balls & strikes.

Ryan Bicondoa pitched six innings in the no decision, K'ing six, walking three, and allowing two runs on four hits. Colonials starter Miguel Flores went 4.1 innings, striking out 10, walking 3 and giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits.

The Tornadoes will have Monday off before hosting the Rockland Boulders for the first time ever on Tuesday. First pitch of the four game set is at 7:05pm.
