'Topes Crush 'Hawks with Record-Setting Offense 23-6

July 31, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

The scorching Albuquerque Isotopes (57-48) pounded out a franchise-best 23 runs in a 23-6 shellacking of the Oklahoma City RedHawks (54-50) Thursday night at Isotopes Park. The runs record also marks the highest by any team in a single game in the Pacific Coast League this season.

It took the 'Topes just four innings to tie the previous runs record of 18 set twice in team history, most recently on June 8, 2006. Albuquerque batted around three times, had all nine starting players on base at least twice and scored 16 of the 23 runs with two outs.

Jamie Hoffmann supplied the biggest assault, going 4-for-6 with six RBI. He drove in four runs with two triples, only the second Isotope to ever stroke two three-baggers in a game while also extending his team-high hitting streak to 17 straight games. Close behind, Major League rehabbing Doug Mientkiewicz found his stroke with four hits, four runs and five RBI.

The first inning foreshadowed the night ahead as Albuquerque racked up eight hits, the most in one inning this season, coming away with an 8-0 lead. With Mientkiewicz aboard and two outs, Albuquerque's next eight batters reached base resulting in the 8-0 advantage. The frame featured RBI doubles from Mitch Jones, Chin-Lung Hu and Tony Abreu as well as a two-run triple from A.J. Ellis, his first of the season.

After a 1-2-3 second, the Isotopes sent nine to the plate in the third, pulling away with a 14-4 lead after the RedHawks tallied two in the second and third. 'Hawks starter Josh Rupe (3-7) issued three walks to load the bases, all of which came around to score. With the bags loaded a second time, Hoffmann delivered a bases-clearing triple to deep center to cap the inning.

The first long ball of the scoring bombardment came in the fourth to catapult Albuquerque ahead by 20-4. Mientkiewicz belted a three-run bomb to right before Jones, who has eight home runs in 11 games with Oklahoma City, blasted a solo shot. Completely unstoppable at this point, the 'Topes claimed the all-time runs mark in the sixth. With the bases full yet again, Dee Brown worked his third walk of the game before singles from Hoffmann and Closser made it 22-4.

Hoffmann's second triple in the bottom of the eighth iced the 'Topes' astounding attack sending home Brown with his fourth run of the evening.

'Topes starter J.D. Durbin lasted just three innings, but unlike Rupe wasn't wildly rocked. Durbin turned things over to Hyang-Name Choi who tossed three scoreless innings with four strikeouts to pick up the win. Josh Lindblom made sure the scoring stayed on Albuquerque's side, allowing one hit over two innings before Martin Arias gave the 'Hawks two in the ninth.

Albuquerque has had a torrid July with tonight marking the third contest over the past eight that Albuquerque has plated more than 15 runs. The 'Topes have lost just two games at home this month and carry a 18-8 July record.

Albuquerque will look for a second series win this homestand behind right-hander Giancarlo Alvarado (8-8, 3.42) who will take on Oklahoma City righty Elizardo Ramirez (7-7, 4.08) in a 7:05 PM MT start from Isotopes Park.

The Isotopes' big eight-game homestand wraps up tomorrow with a spectacular fireworks extravaganza. Tickets for any Isotopes game may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or on-line at www.albuquerquebaseball.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
