LAKEWOOD, NJ - Keyed by the top of their lineup, the BlueClaws topped Greensboro 4-1 in the opener of a three-game series Monday night at FirstEnergy Park.
Malquin Canelo, Jiandido Tromp, and Carlos Tocci combined for seven of the 10 BlueClaws hits as Lakewood improved to 3-2 on the young season.
The BlueClaws broke a 1-1 tie in the 5th inning when Canelo picked up a bunt single with two outs. He was singled to third on a hit and run by Tromp, and driven in by Tocci's RBI single.
Lakewood added another run in the 6th on an RBI single by Damek Tomscha and Tocci drove in his third run of the game with a single in the 7th to score Tromp, who tripled to start the inning.
Tromp had been 0-13 before his 3-3 game. Tocci is now 7-18 to open the season while Canelo improved to 5-17 after his second 2-hit game of the young year.
BlueClaws starter Chris Oliver gave up one run in five innings to earn the win. Austin Davis threw two scoreless innings in relief and Matt Hockenberry got the last six outs for his first save of the year (third professional save).
The series with Greensboro continues Tuesday night at 6:35 pm. LHP Elneiry Garcia (--) makes his first start of the year, opposing LHP Michael Mader (0-1, 94.50).
