Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Charleston, WV- April 13, 2015) - A solid start by West Virginia pitcher John Sever resulted in a 3-1 victory over the Hagerstown Suns on Monday night at Appalachian Power Park. The lone southpaw on the pitching staff struck out four Suns batter in the first two innings and earned his first win in a Power uniform.
Offensively, the Power scored a pair of runs in the second with neither of the scoring plays coming from balls put in play. Elvis Escobar led off the frame with a double and advanced to third on a single by Jerrick Suiter. Those two hits were the only in the second as Chase Simpson drew a walk to load the bases. Tyler Filliben was hit by a pitch to bring home Escobar and Trace Tam Sing followed by drawing a bases-loaded walk to make the score 2-0.
Taylor Gushue padded West Virginia's lead in the third. The catcher, and No. 28 prospect in the Pirates system according to MiLB.com, slugged a solo home run to right. It was Gushue's first home run of the 2015 season and the third overall by Power hitters this year.
Hagerstown scored their only run of the game in the sixth on a Jeff Gardner double that scored Grant Debruin.
Sever (1-0) earned his first victory of the year after he tossed five shutout innings and struck out five. The southpaw allowed five hits while walking one. Suns' starter Phillip Valdez (0-1) suffered the loss. Nick Neumann earned his first save of the season.
The Power play the middle game of the series on Tuesday against Hagerstown. Right hander Jake Burnette (0-0, 3.00) guns for his first victory of the year and he will be opposed by Hagerstown RHP Austen Williams (0-1, 2.25).
