Asheville Tourists News Release
HICKORY, NC-- No matter how hard the Tourists connected at the plate on Monday night, the hits just would not accumulate as Asheville dropped game one of a three game set to the Hickory Crawdads 7-0. The Tourists finished with five hits, all singles, but that number could have been much higher if not for a number of outstanding defensive plays made by the Crawdads.
Hickory plated at least one run in each of the first four innings to take the early momentum. In the first, Travis Demeritte doubled with two outs off Sam Howard to plate Josh Morgan. Jose Trevino made it 2-0 with a solo Home Run in the second. The third inning netted one more for the home team, this time a sacrifice fly off the bat of Demeritte.
The Tourists were forced to go to the bullpen to begin the fourth inning but the Crawdads greeted Yoely Bello with a two-run frame. Isiah Kiner-Falefa grounded out to score Eduard Pinto and two batters later Michael de Leon doubled in Morgan. The Crawdads added two more in the sixth.
Asheville's lone scoring chance came in the fifth. Dom Nunez led off the inning with a single and promptly stole second. After the next two batters were sat down, Forest Wall hit a bouncing ball back up the middle that looked destined to roll through the infield. Somehow, Demeritte was able to keep the ball from going into the outfield and although Wall ended up with a single, Nunez was forced to stay at third. Yonathan Daza flew out to end the threat.
Henry Garcia finished 2-for-3 for Asheville and Scott Firth notched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen. Hickory totaled 14 hits, six of which went for extra-bases. Collin Wiles earned the win for the Crawdads with six innings pitched of shutout baseball.
The Tourists will look to rebound on Tuesday night with game two scheduled for 6:00pm at L.P. Frans Stadium.
