Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA â The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs announced today that former defenseman Tony Bergin has signed with Tingsryds AIF in Tingsryds, Sweden. Bergin will leave this week to begin his seventh professional season after spending five years with the Mudbugs.
The Fredricton, New Brunswick native played in 299 games with the Mudbugs over his career and was a key component of three President's Cup Championship teams from 1998-2001. On Tuesday October 14th, the Mudbugs were forced to release Bergin due to the Central Hockey League's limitation on veteran players (five players with 260 professional games played or more).
"I just want to thank everyone involved with the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs for five great years," said Bergin. "I've met some incredible people during my Mudbugs career from teammates to coaches to fans. Now I'm looking forward to moving on with my career and I'm really excited to be going to play in Sweden."
Bergin leaves the Mudbugs as the team's second all-time leading scorer among defensemen with 165 points (63 goals, 102 assists) and third all-time leader in games played at 299. In 1999-00, he scored a career-high 18 goals and 28 assists during the regular season and added 11 points in the playoffs to help lead the Mudbugs to their second consecutive WPHL Championship.
The 6'3 225-pound defenseman will begin his first professional season in Europe with Tingsryds AIF, which was founded in 1923 and currently plays in Sweden's Division I.
On Thursday, the Mudbugs will host the Northeast Division rival Fort Worth Brahmas at 7:05 p.m. at the CenturyTel Center. Tickets are currently available through Ticketmaster by calling 318-741-9700 or through www.ticketmaster.com.
