Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
MEMPHIS POWERS PAST MUDBUGS â On Friday night, the Mudbugs renewed their rivalry with the Memphis RiverKings in the first of twelve meetings this season between the two teams. The RiverKings, thanks to two power play goals, claimed a 2-1 victory in front of 2,664 fans at the DeSoto Civic Center. The Mudbugs opened the scoring with Jim Sprott notching a power play goal at 6:30 on a slap shot from the blue line. The Bugs enjoyed the lead until Jonathan Gagnon tipped a Derek Landmesser shot past Mudbugs goaltender Ken Carroll with 4.7 seconds left in the first period to even the score. After a scoreless second period, Memphis struck again on the power play as Brian Tucker found Derek Landmesser cruising in from the blueline at 1:15 of the third period. The Mudbugs outshot the RiverKings in the third period 10-6 and mounted a solid attack, but Memphis goaltender Shawn Conschafter made all ten saves and earned his second victory of the season. The game featured the debut of Mudbugs rookie forwards Ryan Manitowich and Colin Kendall.
SPECIAL TEAMS BATTLE AGAIN IN 5-3 LOSS â On Saturday, special teams again proved to be a huge factor in the outcome of the Mudbugs' rematch with the RiverKings. With two power play goals and one shorthanded goal, the RiverKings prevailed for the second consecutive evening, 5-3. The RiverKings built a 2-0 lead as Alexandre Mathieu and Jay Neal notched first period goals. Memphis enjoyed the 2-0 lead until the final minute of the first period when Forbes MacPherson cut the deficit in half with his second goal of the season on the power play at 19:11. In the second period, the Mudbugs took control early as Chad Spurr and Chris Brassard hooked up with Craig Soke for the tying goal. Chad Spurr then notched his second of the year with a shorthanded goal at 3:53 to give the Mudbugs their first lead of the night. However, in the third period, Don Parsons and Jay Neal scored to give Memphis the lead they would not relinquish. The game featured 14 fighting majors, including six in the game's final thirty seconds.
