
Tompkins named Rogers CFL Special Teams Player of the Month

(Edmonton) Eskimo special teams star Tony Tompkins has turned a lot of heads in the first six weeks of the CFL season and his efforts have been recognized as he takes home Rogers CFL Special Teams Player of the Month honours for July.
Tony twice earned Rogers Player of the Week status for his special teams heroics with the first coming in Week 4 as the Eskimos beat Winnipeg 14-12. He opened the game with a 57-yard kickoff return and added 142 yards on 8 punt returns (17.5 avg.) including an 80-yard romp to open the second quarter.
Tompkins' second weekly award was earned just six days later in Ottawa (Week 5) as he chalked-up a 96-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter of the 29-21 victory over the Renegades.
Currently, Tompkins leads the CFL in punt return yardage with 557 yards on 26 returns (21.4 avg.) and two touchdowns.
The Eskimos travel to Vancouver to take on the BC Lions on Friday, August 5 at 7:00 pm (PT). The next Eskimos home game is Saturday, August 20 versus the 2004 Grey Cup Champion Toronto Argonauts at 7:00 pm.
