Ottawa Renegades News Release
OTTAWA - Ottawa Renegades defensive end Anthony Collier, who began the 2005 season on the team's practice roster, was named the Rogers-CFL Lineman of the Month Thursday.
The 25-year-old capped off an outstanding month of July in Regina last Friday with a game-changing interception - which, after running back 45 yards, he flipped to linebacker Kyries Hebert who went the distance for a touchdown in a 21-16 Renegades win - to compliment his league-leading six sacks.
Collier, who played in four of the first half-dozen Renegades games (also missed Week 4 due to a knee injury), first caught national attention when he registered a five-sack effort at B.C. on July 8 - tying a CFL record for most in the category in a single game. The Dallas, TX native has also accumulated five tackles and a pass knockdown through the first third of the 2005 campaign.
"This organization is honoured to have one of its players named the lineman of the month and it is a great honour for this young man," said Renegades head coach and general manager Joe Paopao. "Through hard work, Anthony has impacted the defence in the early stages of the season. We look forward to his play through to the end of the balance of the season."
A pre-med major at Baylor University, Collier earned All-Big 12 status in the U.S. college ranks before joining Ottawa last season. In his debut as a Renegade, he forced a key, late-third quarter fumble that led to an important Ottawa touchdown and win. His playmaking abilities have continued into his sophomore season in the nation's capital.
This is the second national honour for Collier in 2005. He was also named the Rogers-CFL lineman of the week on July 12 after his breakout effort against the Lions at B.C. Place in Week 3.
