December 6, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Missouri Mavericks announced today that defenseman Tommy Vannelli has been reassigned to the team by the St. Louis Blues from the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves. Additionally, Rocco Carzo has been loaned to the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Kyle Schempp has been reassigned by the New York Islanders to Bridgeport.
Vannelli, 21, is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound defender who was taken 47th overall by the Blues in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He began his pro career last season with AHL Chicago and registered one assist, eight penalty minutes and a +4 rating in seven games. Vannelli's rookie season was cut short due to injury and he maintains his rookie status due to his number of games played.
Prior to turning pro, Vannelli played two seasons with Medicine Hat of the Western Hockey League and helped the Tigers to back-to-back seasons of over 40 wins. He had his best season in 2013-14 with 41 points (14g, 27a) in 60 games and added eight points (2g, 6a) in 18 playoff games as Medicine Hat reached the WHL conference finals.
Vanelli's amateur career also included one season with the U.S. National Development Team Program and an appearance in the World Under-18 Championships where he helped the US win a silver medal. For his junior career Vannelli totaled 83 points (30g, 53a) and 94 penalty minutes in 135 games.
Carzo, an alternate captain for Missouri, heads to the AHL for the first time this season. He currently ranks second on the Mavericks with 14 points and is tied for the team lead with seven goals. This is Carzo's third-career AHL call up and he has earned one assist in eight combined games between the Norfolk Admirals and San Diego Gulls.
Schempp, a rookie, joined the Mavericks on October 31 on reassignment by the Islanders and went on to notch five points (3g, 2a) in 13 games with Missouri. The former sixth-round draft pick (#155 overall) by the Islanders has appeared in five AHL games with the Sound Tigers and has two assists to his credit.
