Toledo's Huntington Center Earns Leed Gold Certification

September 16, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Toledo Walleye News Release

The Toledo Walleye may never play for a gold medal, but their home ice, the Huntington Center, has just taken home LEED Gold. The LEED Gold plaque was unveiled at a news conference on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. in the Huntington Center lobby at the corner of Huron and Jefferson in downtown Toledo.

After a rigorous review process, the Huntington Center has earned the prestigious LEED Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council. The Gold ranking is the second-highest ranking in the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) green building rating system. LEED is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

The Lucas County Commissioners and the Huntington Center design team, including HNTB Architecture, The Collaborative Inc., Lathrop Turner, Toledo Arena Sports Inc., and SMG, began exploring sustainable design in early 2007. The group committed to creating a LEED building, as a way to be both environmentally and fiscally responsible.

The team also partnered with local "green" companies like Owens Corning, Inc., Pilkington Glass, and Columbia Gas who invested their energy-efficient products and design into the space.

"With each new LEED-certified building, we get one step closer to USGBC's vision of a sustainable built environment within a generation," said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. "As the newest member of the LEED family of green buildings, the Huntington Center is an important addition to the growing strength of the green building movement."

The Huntington Center is the third LEED Gold building in Toledo, including ABLE / LAWO's offices across the street, as well as another building at the University of Toledo.
