Royals Acquire Rights to Forward Matt Caruana

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has acquired the ECHL rights to forward Matt Caruana ["KAIR uh WAH nah"] from the Gwinnett Gladiators of the ECHL in exchange for future considerations. Caruana (6'0/187) (25), who hails from Orono, Ontario, scored thirteen goals and picked up twelve assists (twenty-five points) in thirty-two games for the Gladiators last season. Caruana, who will be entering his third full season of pro, also registered nine points (3g-6a) in thirty-six games last season with the Portland Pirates of the AHL. Caruana, who was signed to an NHL contract by the Anaheim Ducks after completing his collegiate eligibility at Niagara University, has played eighty-two games in the AHL, including forty-one in the 2008-09 season with the Iowa Chops. While at Niagara University, Caruana scored fifty-one goals and assisted on seventy-eight others (129 points) in 146 total college games. In his senior season, Caruana captained the Purple Eagles squad that won the College Hockey America championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament.

The Royals host the team's tenth anniversary home opener on Saturday, October 23, 2010 (7:05 pm), when the Elmira Jackals visit the Sovereign Center.
