Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Toledo, OH - The Toledo Mud Hens scored early and often at Huntington Park en route to a 10-4 victory over the Columbus Clippers on Wednesday.
With one out in the top of the third, Danny Woodrow legged out an infield single with a dribbler placed perfectly between the pitcher and first basemen. Woodrow advanced to second on a passed ball before scoring on a Jacob Robson single to the outfield, giving Toledo a 1-0 lead, and they wouldn't look back.
Harold Castro wasted no time extending his hitting streak in the game. With two outs in the top of the first, Castro sent a soft line drive up the middle that landed in the outfield for a single, pushing his streak to 19 games, the longest streak of the season for any Toledo batter.
In the bottom of the first, Toledo starter Drew VerHagen went to work, getting the first two batters to fly out and the third to ground out, throwing just 11 pitches to get the job done in the inning.
In the fourth, the Hens turned to small ball. A throwing error by Cody Anderson allowed H. Castro to reach first. Next up, Willi Castro bunted to the left side for a single to put runners on first and second with no outs. A deep fly ball to center by Mikie Mahtook was caught, but allowed both runners to advance for Toledo, setting up an RBI groundout for Bobby Wilson with H. Castro scoring from third.
Columbus logged their first hit of the game to leadoff the fourth inning. Greg Allen laced a single to center field, then advanced to second on a rogue pickoff attempt by Toledo's pitcher, VerHagen. On an infield hit by Brandon Barnes, Allen advanced to third and rounded on the throw to first that was too late. Toledo attempted to throw out Allen on his round, but a wild throw allowed Allen to score and Barnes to move to second, making the score just 2-1 Mud Hens.
In the top of the fifth, Matt Hall entered the game for Toledo, replacing the starter VerHagen. VerHagen lasted four innings for the Hens, striking out three while allowing just two hits and one unearned run. In his first inning of work, Hall loaded the bases, but worked his way out of the jam without any damage.
To begin the sixth, Jeimer Candelario sent a moon shot to right field that bounced off the wall for a double. Another base hit for H. Castro, making him 3-for-3, moved Candelario to third to give Toledo runners at the corners with no outs. Runner placement would not matter though, with W. Castro belting a towering shot to right center that went off the Clippers' scoreboard for a three-run home run, increasing the lead to 5-1, but Toledo wasn't satisfied. Mahtook doubled in the next at-bat to left center followed by a walk to Bobby Wilson, bringing on a pitching change, ending Cody Anderson's day.
Anderson tossed five innings for the Clippers, striking out four, but allowing 11 hits, one walk and six runs. He was replaced by the right-handed Chih-Wei Hu with two on and no outs.
Hu's first batter faced was Dustin Peterson, who reached on a full count walk to load the bases with no outs for the Mud Hens. After a force out at home on a Daz Cameron groundball in front of the plate, Woodrow sent a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Wilson to score, putting the score at 6-1 Toledo.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Trayce Thompson singled for Columbus and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Thompson would move to third on an Adam Rosales single to give the Clippers runners at the corners. Thompson scored on a fielder's choice ground ball by Eric Stamets, making the score 6-2 in favor of Toledo after seven.
In the top half of the eighth inning, Mahtook joined the group of players to hit the scoreboard for the Mud Hens on Wednesday, crushing a solo home run to increase the Hens' lead to 7-2. After a pop out by Wilson, Peterson and Cameron both singled to put two on for Toledo with one out in the inning. Next up, Woodrow would send yet another ball out of the stadium, the second home run of the inning for the Mud Hens, pushing the lead to 10-2.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Clippers chipped away a little at the Mud Hens lead. Tim Federowicz singled off the left field wall followed by a Bobby Bradley home run to right field, cutting the Toledo lead to 10-4.
For the game's relievers, Hu ended with four innings pitched, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four. As for Toledo's Hall, he tossed five innings, giving up seven hits, one walk and three runs while striking out four.
