Toledo Mud Hens Have the Hitters

The Toledo Mud Hens (39-49) claimed a 5-2 victory over the Louisville Bats (43-46) Friday night at Fifth Third Field. The Hens, playing in front of their eleventh sellout of the season, posted eight total hits, three players had multi-hit games.

Toledo's starter Thad Weber occupied the mound for seven innings, giving up six hits and two runs. During Weber's stretch, he retired two batters, lowering his ERA to 3.77. Tom Gorzelanny, who recently accepted assignment to Toledo from Detroit, made his first appearance in Mud Hens uniform. Gorzelanny hurled a total of 11 pitches before being replaced by Drew VerHagen in the top of the eighth. Weber was given the decision, leaving him at 6-4 on the season.

In the box, the first four batters for the Hens all reached base. Mike "King" Hessman went 2-for-4, smacking a solo home run to left field in the sixth inning. After both Daniel Fields and Alexi Casilla are walked, Corey Jones, going 2-for-4 on the night, knocked a homer (second of the season) in the bottom of the sixth. With Hessman's home run, he is at 429 career home runs, four away from breaking the Minor League record.

The Mud Hens are back in a double-header tomorrow against Louisville, the first game is slated for 5 pm. One of Toledo's only lefty's, Mike Belfiore (3-8, 5.68 ERA) is set to take the mound in game one.
