Bats Drop Series Opener in Toledo, 5-2

TOLEDO, Oh - The Louisville Bats (43-46) dropped the series opener to the Toledo Mud Hens (39-49), 5-2.

The Bats and Mud Hens went five scoreless innings before the All-Star Irving Falu doubled in Chris Dominguez and Jose Constanza for the 2-0 lead.

It wasn't long until the former Louisville Bat, Mike Hessman sent one out to cut the lead in half, 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Righty Jose De La Torre replaced righty Keyvius Sampson (L, 1-3, 5.02) in the bottom of the sixth after back-to-back walks. Toledo's third baseman, Corey Jones put the Mud Hens ahead with a three-run homer to finish out the sixth on top.

Sampson went five and two thirds of an inning, gave up six hits, four earned runs, he walked three and struck out four.

Toledo right-hander Thad Weber (W, 6-4, 3.77) went seven innings, gave up six hits, just two earned runs, walked one, and struck out two. Righty Drew VerHagen (S, 1) went two scoreless innings to close out the game and earn his first save of the season.

The Bats couldn't rally any runs after the fifth and fell to Toledo, 5-2.

Tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. starts a doubleheader in Toledo. Starting game one for Louisville is right-hander Matt Buschmann (1-1, 3.74) and for Toledo, left-hander Mike Belfiore (3-8, 5.68). Game two will be right-hander Donovan Hand (1-5, 5.34) for the Bats and Toledo is to be announced.
