Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Toledo, OH - The Toledo Mud Hens took on the Columbus Clippers at Fifth Third Field on Monday falling by a score of 12-2.
The Clippers kept momentum rolling against the Mud Hens, logging 17 hits against Toledo, the highest mark against the club this year. With two runs in the first, Columbus took an early lead and didn't look back.
In the top of the first, Columbus broke open the scoring column early. Greg Allen began with a double to left-center and advanced to third on a single through the right side of the infield by Yu Chang. Allen would then score on a single by Daniel Johnson before the Hens recorded the first out of the game via swinging strike. Next, Ryan Flaherty singled to score Chang, but was thrown out at first after second-guessing a decision to go for second. A pop-up would end the half of the inning with Columbus leading 2-0.
After the Hens were sent down in order, Eric Haase reached first on a single to begin the second inning for the Clippers. A groundout would move Haase to second and would be followed by Eric Stamets being hit by a pitch. Allen would then single to left to score Haase and move Stamets to second before Chang would walk to load the bases. Daniel Johnson would also walk, bringing in another run for the Clippers. A Brandon Barnes single would bring in Allen to increase the lead. Flaherty would single through the left side of the infield to score both Chang and Johnson, but Barnes would be thrown out between second and third for the second out with the score at 7-0 Columbus.
Toledo starter Kyle Funkhouser would be replaced by Caleb Thielbar with two outs in the second inning. Thielbar would strike out the first batter he faced to end the second inning. For Funkhouser, his day would conclude after 1.2 innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits with two walks, one strikeout and one hit batter.
In the bottom of the second, the Mud Hens logged their first hit of the game with Mikie Mahtook singling to right field, but a fielder's choice ground ball would end the inning.
In the top of the third, Haase would begin with a single to right-center for Columbus. He would move up to second on a wild pitch. After a walk to Mark Mathias, Stamets would single to right field to score Haase and move Mathias up to second. A groundout would move Stamets and Mathias up to second and third, respectively. A strikeout and fly ball would end the inning, favoring the Clippers 8-0.
The Hens would stabilize in the fourth and fifth innings, sending the Clippers down in order in both innings. Thielbar would exit before the start of the sixth inning, totaling 3.1 innings pitched with one run allowed on two hits and one walk while striking out four.
Thielbar's replacement would be Trevor Rosenthal, who would be making his first appearance in Toledo since being signed by the Tigers' organization. Rosenthal would be greeted by a single to Allen, who would advance to second on a wild pitch. Allen would then score on a single by Johnson. Barnes would also single before Flaherty would triple to deep center, scoring both Johnson and Barnes. With Flaherty on third, Trayce Thompson would go to first after being hit by a pitch. A walk to Haase would load the bases and bring an end to Rosenthal's day, being replaced by John Schreiber.
Schreiber would strike out two to end the inning. Rosenthal's final line would include three runs on four hits with one walk, one hit batter and one wild pitch over one-third of an inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Jake Rogers kicked off the Hens half with a double off the left-center wall. Rogers would move up to third on a fly ball to center before scoring on a home run by Jacob Robson to center field, scoring the first runs of the day for Toledo. Dawel Lugo would reach on a walk, but would be out on a fielder's choice ground ball with Victor Reyes safe at second. Another single, this time by Willi Castro, would put two on for Toledo. However, a strikeout would end the inning before Toledo could score again.
In the top of the seventh, Bryan Garcia would enter to pitch for Toledo replacing Schreiber, who struck out both batters he faced. In his lone inning of work, Garcia would send down the Clippers in order.
In the bottom of the seventh Columbus made a change on the mound replacing starter Tanner Tully with Cam Hill. Over six innings Tully gave up two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out six.
Ronny Rodriguez entered the game at second base for Toledo in the top of the eighth inning. Pete Kozma then moved from second to the mound. His last appearance came on August 15, 2018. Kozma was welcomed by Barnes who sent a shot to left-center for his 17th home run this year. After a fly out, Thompson tripled off the right field wall. However, two more fly outs would end the inning with Columbus leading 12-2.
After two outs were recorded in the bottom of the eighth, Jon Edwards replaced Hill, who struck out one over 1.2 hitless innings. Edwards would record a strikeout, moving the game to the ninth inning.
After two fly outs in the top of the ninth, Chang doubled off the right field wall to give Columbus another runner in the game, but another fly out would end the inning. Kozma would end with a line of two innings pitched, giving up one run on three hits and one walk.
