Durham Bulls News Release

DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls nearly bounced back from a four-run deficit before falling 4-3 to the Charlotte Knights Monday at the DBAP. Matt Foster (3-1) recorded the win for the Knights, while Jose De Leon (0-1) suffered the loss for the Bulls in the opener of a three-game set.

The Knights provided a steady stream of runs against De Leon, beginning with an RBI double by Danny Mendick in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Ryan Goins added another in the top of the second, with an RBI single to take a 2-0 advantage.

Yermin Mercedes launched a solo home run over the Blue Monster in the top of the third inning to extend the lead once again. Adam Engel added more insurance for the Knights, with an RBI single to increase the lead to 4-0 in the fourth. The Bulls were able to get a run back in the sixth, thanks to a balk by Knights reliver Matt Foster that drove in Anthony Bemboom and made it 4-1.

The Bulls' comeback attempt continued in the seventh, beginning with an RBI double by Bemboom to cut the deficit to two. Jason Coats shrunk the lead to 4-3 later in the frame with an RBI single to drive in Bemboom. That was as close as the Bulls would get however, putting up scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth to drop their third straight game.

Durham and Charlotte will meet again Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at the DBAP, before wrapping the three-game set Wednesday at 6:35 p.m.
