Clearwater Threshers News Release

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Carlos Tocci turned in his second-straight multi-hit performance, but the Clearwater Threshers suffered a 3-0 loss to the Palm Beach Cardinals in game two of the series at Bright House Field.

Daniel Poncedeleon (3-0) held Clearwater off the board on six hits and did not issue a walk in his eight innings.

David Whitehead turned in a solid outing in the start for Clearwater, but suffered the loss on Thursday. Whitehead (6-8) permitted three runs - two earned - on eight hits and two walks, while picking up five strikeouts.

Palm Beach (14-7) got on the board against Whitehead in the second inning, after Collin Radack started the frame with a single. He would later score on an RBI hit by Carson Kelly.

Poncedeleon retired the first 10 men he faced in order, before Tocci and Andrew Pullin connected for back-to-back singles with one down in the fourth inning. Poncedeleon then got Rhys Hoskins to ground into a double play to end the threat.

Whitehead cruised through the middle innings, before the Cardinals managed to extend their lead to 3-0 in the seventh.

Kelly opened the inning with his fifth homer of the season, and Michael Massi walked with one out. CJ McElroy Jr then laid down a bunt single, and both runners moved to scoring position on an errant throw from catcher Chace Numata.

Danny Diekroeger followed with a single to right, scoring Massi to make it 3-0.

Miguel Nunez entered in relief of Whitehead with men at the corners and just one out, and induced a double play grounder off the bat of Brett Wiley to end the inning. Nunez allowed just a walk in 2.2 hitless innings in relief.

The Threshers (15-6) will host Palm Beach for game three of the four-game set on Pitch for Pink Night on Friday, with Victor Arano (3-8) on the hill against Luke Weaver (2-4). First pitch will be at 6:30 p.m., and the call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:15 p.m.

Players will be donning special pink jerseys, which will be auctioned off during the game, and a post-game concert will feature Treach and Kay Gee of Naughty by Nature along with Infinite Skillz. Proceeds will benefit breast health services and programs at the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease.
