Daytona Tortugas News Release
Jupiter, FL - The road woes continue for the Daytona Tortugas (9-10, 46-43) as they lost another contest away from home, 6-4, to the Jupiter Hammerheads (6-14, 41-49). Although the Tortugas are just beginning a seven-game road trip, their first bid for a win was an unsuccessful one. Daytona partially climbed out of a four-run deficit late in the game but plenty of Jupiter offense and a costly seventh inning Daytona error proved too much to overcome.
Daytona took an early lead in the game when they were able to pounce on MLB rehabber Henderson Alvarez for a run in the top of the second. While Alvarez struck out the side in the first inning and retired the first two in the second, Daytona found some two-out production. RF Jeff Gelalichreached on an infield single and then stole second base. Next, C Joe Hudson drove him in with an RBI single up the middle the get the Tortugas a 1-0 lead.
However, the lead did not last long. In the bottom half of the inning, the Hammerheads offense came to life for three runs on three hits off of Daytona starter RHP Sal Romano (L, 5-4). The first three batters, Avery
Romero, Felix Munoz and Justin Bohn all reached base safely and scored a run to get the Hammerheads the 3-1 advantage.
With Alvarez still pitching in the top of the third, once again the Tortugas were able to solve him for run. This time CF Junior Arias reached on a fielder's choice and came all the way around to score on a double from DH Sebastian Elizalde to make it 3-2.
In the bottom of the third, Romano got the first two outs of inning but Romero was once again able to reach base, this time on a throwing error. During the next at-bat, Felix Munoz took two balls before some rain came rolling in. The tarp was pulled over the infield and a rain delay paused the game for just under an hour. Romano was able to continue in the game after the delay but on the first pitch of the resumption, he let up a single to Munoz that scored Romero for an unearned run and put the Hammerheads back in front, 4-2. Romano lasted into the sixth inning but was replaced by RHP Scott Brattvet with one out in the frame. Later in the sixth, two more unearned runs came across for Jupiter when Romero and Bohn both scored, partly due to a fielding error from LF Phillip Ervin. With the two runs, Jupiter led 6-2.
Daytona fought back well in the seventh when Hammerhead pitcher C.J. Robinson began the inning by walking two batters in a row, 2B Wendell Sotoand SS Carlton Daal. Both stole a base in a successful double steal. Later in the inning, Elizalde pulled a double down the right field line scoring both runners. Elizalde finished the night 2-4 with three RBIs, giving him 60 on the season. Daal led off and reached base safely three times. With the seventh inning runs, Daytona cut the Jupiter lead to two but could not find a run for the rest of the game. LHP Nolan Becker pitched the final 1.1 scoreless innings for the Tortugas.
With the win, Jupiter now leads the season series, 3-2. The four-game set continues tomorrow with game two at 6:35 P.M. from Roger Dean Stadium. Fans can listen to the action on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 6:50 P.M.
