KANNAPOLIS, NC - Carlos Tocci's RBI triple put the BlueClaws ahead 5-4 in the 10th inning and Alexis Rivero threw a scoreless bottom of the 10th as the BlueClaws topped Kannapolis 5-4 on Thursday night.
The win got the BlueClaws back to .500 at 16-16 and was also their third straight win.
Tocci, who had two hits, now had 14 multi-hit games to lead the BlueClaws. He's hitting .349 on the year, second best in the South Atlantic League.
Matt Hockenberry (1-0) earned the win with a 1-2-3 ninth inning while Rivero, despite allowing two hits, struck out the side in the 10th inning to earn his first save of the season. Devon Davis (2-2) took the loss for Kannapolis, who fell to 14-18.
After falling behind 3-1, the BlueClaws tied the game in the 4th inning, scoring first on an RBI triple by Jiandido Tromp and second on a SAC fly by Herlis Rodriguez. After Kannapolis re-took the lead in the 6th inning, Tromp blasted his second triple of the game leading off the 7th inning, and came home when the throw to third base went into the dugout.
Viza came out after going six innings, allowing four runs, three earned, and striking out a career-high nine hitters. Austin Davis threw two scoreless innings in relief, leaving runners in scoring position each inning.
Lakewood had taken the lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Carlos Tocci but fell behind 3-1 on a three-run, second-inning home run by Mason Robbins.
Kannpolis starter Thad Lowry threw a career-long 8.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits.
Tromp, who went 3-4 in the game, became just the 5th BlueClaws player to ever get two triples in a game, and the BlueClaws three triples in the game for just the second time this year.
The series continues on Friday night. RHP Ranfi Casimiro (1-2) starts for Lakewood opposite RHP Yency Almonte (0-2).
